HSP Therapy: A Tool of Success for Sensitive Women In Tech
A Personal Journey as a Woman in Tech
In the 1990s, as I sat across from my academic advisor telling him about my decision to switch my major to computer science, I was met with with a raised eyebrow and a chuckle from this aging hippy professor. He thought I was joking. He suggested that English would be a more suitable major for me. But my rebellious spirit was stronger than my sensitivity at that moment. I loved literature, but I also knew the thrill of writing code and solving complex problems. His suggestion was just plain wrong.
I did it. I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, even though I was one of a handful of women in my major. My early experiences in this male-dominated field, combined with my upbringing in a military family, prepared me for the realities of the tech workforce. While I acknowledge the privilege that helped me in my career, I also recognize the unique challenges faced by minorities and women in the tech industry.
As a woman in tech for over two decades, and now a therapist specializing in working with highly sensitive people (HSPs), I have navigated the complexities of this unique intersection. This article aims to shed light on how HSP therapy can help women in tech, especially those who identify as highly sensitive people.
What Is a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?
Being a highly sensitive person means you process sensory data more deeply and thoroughly due to a biological difference in your nervous system. This unique trait is found in about 20% of the population. HSPs are more aware of subtleties and tend to be more empathic and thoughtful. It's important to note that high sensitivity is not a disorder. It’s an innate trait that can bring many strengths, but it can also pose challenges when not understood or managed well.
How Can You Tell If You're an HSP?
As an HSP, you might find yourself deeply moved by art or music, affected by other people's moods, or overwhelmed by bright lights, strong smells, or loud noises. You might need to withdraw to a darkened room or any quiet space after a day full of appointments or meetings. You may become uncomfortable with high levels of stimulation and feel a deep connection with nature.
High sensitivity can also be reflected in your work habits. You might find yourself drawn to perfectionism, holding yourself to a high standard, which can lead to excellent results but may also lead to burnout if not properly managed. HSPs are often thorough and conscientious, which can make them valuable team members and leaders.
Challenges and Strengths of Being an HSP Women in Tech
For women in tech, the tech industry is fast-paced and high-stress, which can be challenging for HSPs who need quiet and downtime to recharge. However, being an HSP also comes with many strengths that are valuable in this industry. HSPs are often innovative thinkers, as they notice details others miss and make connections that are not immediately apparent. They are conscientious and dedicated to their work, often going above and beyond to ensure high-quality results.
As a leader, an HSP’s empathy and attentiveness can lead to a deep understanding of their team members' needs, fostering a supportive and productive work environment. Their ability to notice subtleties can help them anticipate challenges and find creative solutions.
However, stepping into leadership roles can bring new challenges for HSPs. The increased responsibility and visibility can feel overwhelming. The need to make tough decisions and provide feedback can be stressful for someone sensitive to others' reactions.
How HSP Therapy Can Help
HSP therapy can be a game-changer for women in tech, especially those in leadership roles. It can help you understand and manage your sensitivity, turning it from a potential liability to a strength. It can help you set boundaries to protect your energy, deal with perfectionism, and build resilience to stress.
Therapy can also provide strategies for handling feedback and criticism without taking it personally. With these tools, you can step into leadership roles with confidence. Bringing your unique strengths to the table and shaping the tech industry in new, inclusive, and innovative ways.
You Have the Strength and the Skills to Succeed
High sensitivity is a gift that can bring unique strengths to the tech industry. But it's also essential to understand the challenges it brings and learn to manage them effectively. HSP therapy can provide the tools to navigate these challenges. Helping highly sensitive women in tech to shine as the leaders they are.
Do you identify with the traits described here? Consider reaching out to an experienced HSP therapist. Remember, it's not about 'fixing' something that's 'wrong' with you – it's about understanding your unique traits and leveraging them for success in your personal and professional life.
